Paradise — 2021

35mm color anamorphic film, 20 min

Director: Tacita Dean
Cinematography: Trevor Tweeten

Dean’s 35mm anamorphic film, which was shown on the stage in the final act of the ballet The Dante Project.  The film, features an aperture gate masking system that allows different sequences to exist within a single-film frame. It is inspired by the colors used in the Paradise section of William Blake’s series of vivid watercolor illustrations of the Divine Comedy (1824).   Taking the latter as a point of departure, Dean captures and experiments with pure light and color as her subject in an entirely abstracted form.
